I was over at Nate's tonight for some spaghetti dinner with a group of friends. We watched last week's episode of House, which was good, but Nate had downloaded a couple episodes of a show called The Big Bang Theory that nobody had seen yet. It's an incredibly geeky show, replete with tons of physics and mathematic references that are tied into jokes. I'm going to have to try to dig up more episodes now, since a number of them have run this season. Something tells me the show won't survive very long, not for lack of humor but for lack of an appropriately-large audience.

The 2009 Honda Fit sport looks nice. This is the Japanese version so the USA version may be slightly different. Rear | Roof | Storage | Seats | Panel

Over the Thanksgiving break Felipe and his wife traded in their cars for a couple new Hondas. Felipe got a red Accord V6 (with 18" wheels), she got the more-efficient Civic EX.

I'm really ticked off at my desktop computer (stupid soundblaster), needed a funny picture to break the tone.

This weekend was fun. Left Melbourne yesterday with Sputnik and Matt around 5:30 and drove over to Orlando to the Carmax dealer. We picked up Andrew there since he had just sold his Mustang convertible. After that we continued on to Universal City Walk where we met up with Ron, Courtney, and two of Courtney's friends. We had some food at the Latin Quarter restaurant, great mahi mahi and they had some of the hottest sauce I've ever had.

We walked around a bit after that since Andrew and Sputnik hadn't been to City Walk before. Up by Pat O'Briens a local band called Orange Avenue was playing some covers of popular songs. A few of us got drinks there, mine was the signature Hurricane. The taste grew on me some but still wouldn't be one of my top choices.

After the music was done and we got bored of hanging around, we left City Walk and headed over to the Marriot's Horizons where Courtney had booked a villa. Her two friends had to go back home for work early the next morning, so it was just the six of us there. We did some drinking and played poker, watched Sleepy Hollow on the big-screen TV, pretty much a typical gathering for our crowd. The villa was pretty much a 2-bedroom apartment, even had washer/dryer.

In the morning there was a fire alarm at the hotel, but all of us were already up by then anyway. We walked outside and it cut off, but the fire department still showed up. Shortly after that we checked out and went over to Golden Corral; I hadn't been to one of them in a long time.

My Kia is all fixed up with new wheels now. The hubcap that didn't fit the wheel before now fits great.

Yet another easy test in Java class yesterday. I think some of us are worried that the advanced-level Java course next semester is going to be a bit overwhelming after this basic-level one.

My laptop is back from the dead. The DC jack arrived in the mail today, just before I was heading off to see Beowulf with a group of people. It was a RealD presentation at the Oaks which meant we all got 3D polarized glasses; of course the entry charge was a bit higher than usual too. It was neat though, I haven't seen a 3D movie in a long time and never a feature-length one. I had to pull my corrective glasses out of the drawer and dust them off for the movie. 3D stuff is the only time that I need 20/20 in both eyes or else it looks awful.

After that was done I continued on to Harris where all my stuff was setup the laptop parts. I got the new jack soldered onto the mainboard and put everything back together hoping that it would work. Sure enough it started charging right away and would power on.

Saphira and Lazula are very entertaining cats. If not a bit wacky.

Felipe and Adam were over tonight and we watched Adam's copy of Ocean's 13 on HD-DVD.

Georgia tries to pray up a storm to end the drought. I agree with the guy who said "you couldn't make this up."

Also last night after work I was able to get the jack off the motherboard after some help from the dremel, so that put me in a better mood.

My laptop repair is not going as planned. The DC jack didn't work even after adding solder, so I had to order a new one off eBay. For some reason the contacts inside the jack for positive voltage were not touching. In addition to that the old jack is being very stubborn and not wanting to desolder from the PCB.

Doug, one of my coworkers, did electronics repair for 20 years and has some nice soldering pencils so he's going to bring those to work so I can try that. A new motherboard would set me back $165 so I'm trying to avoid that if possible.

Last night we ended up continuing our Halo playing after a BBQ over at Nate's place. I had my projector over at Felipe's shooting onto a blank wall and so we got about 130" going, which even split four ways meant everybody got their own 65" screen. I learned that I'm not very good at Halo3, never been a fan of the controller-based FPS. We got tired of that around midnight and Felipe put in the South Park movie DVD.

Today I stopped by the Brevard Zoo around 3pm to see the jaguar cub and walk around for a bit. She's a bit over 4 months old now, very playful and energetic. The Wendy's by the zoo was already playing Christmas music... give me a break.

Tonight there is a Halo3 deathmatch at Felipe's house. Should be about 8 people participating between two 360's, pizza, lots of fun.

My Inspiron laptop officially has to undergo the knife now. By knife it would be more appropriate to say soldering iron. The DC jack on my motherboard has come loose, making operation almost impossible. It's the same crap that happened with my Sony laptop, but that one fortunately had an extended warranty. I'm going to take the opportunity to also replace the keyboard with a new one, since I have to remove all of the internal parts to get at the mainboard connector. If I'm unable to successfully reconnect the jack, it's going to cost about $180 dollars to ship it to a repair center, have it fixed, and mailed back. Most of the cost probably spent on labor for them to remove all the parts and replace them, and about a 2 minute solder job.

We've had some really nice weather this weekend... sunny days and cool nights. When I was coming back home from Adam's one of the bank signs said 64 degrees outside.

Get ready for Red Friday

Today has been a movin' and shakin' day for HD DVD. Wal-Mart announced a "secret sale" on the web site with the Toshiba HD-A2 player for $98 one-day only on November 2nd (tomorrow) starting at 8am. Plus they have a selection of discs for $15 each. I can almost hear Sony's cries of pain for Blu-Ray.

Best Buy followed suit this afternoon, selling off any remaining inventory of A2s for $99. They are currently stocking the HD-A3 though so only a few stores had the old ones left.

Circuit City has been pricematching Best Buy so any of those stores that still have HD-A2s are also selling for $99, even lower if you get the 110% price match.

Amazon hasn't jumped into the game yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they also have some sort of HD-A2 special tomorrow.
